We all know it's transactional at its heart, but we choose to play other roles. It make life sweeter and ultimately more tolerable. I remember this sensation from when I used to sell wine. Some of my friendships with clients were real and endured well after I left that job. Others were more routine role-playing. One thing I learned living here in Rome, is that daily exchanges between buyers and sellers ( the barista, the fruitstand, etc,) matter. What is life without this deliberate veneer of humanity? I may never know their last names, nor they mine, but they smile when they see me coming, and vice versa. And sometimes that's enough to turn around your day.
